E-Tip 218 - Tips for Managing Organizational Change

5 Tips For Managing Organizational Change:

1. Plan Ahead - Whenever possible it is always a good idea to plan ahead for change. People usually like to know how a particular change is going to affect them and it is helpful for them to have some time to adjust to the idea of the change.

2. Work On Your Interpersonal Skills - It is important to communicate effectively with everyone (usually in a face-to-face meeting, if possible, rather than an e-mail), especially when introducing change. It has been proven that the more information people have, the more likely they will be to accept change.

3. Make Yourself Available - If you are like me, you are running in a dozen or so directions each day; therefore, it is important that you make yourself available to everyone. Take note of their questions, especially at the beginning, so you can separate fact from fiction sooner rather than later.

4. Be Proactive With Your Team - It is a good idea to check on everyone's progress when implementing change. Talk to everyone and take a look at the workflow to see if things are moving smoothly. You are more likely to hear relevant information if you are reaching out to others to find out how it is going.

5. Don't Forget To Listen - Don't forget to listen to your employees. Statistics have proven that many employees can offer great ideas to save both time and money. Sure, you can do everything right, but if you do not listen to your people, you will not get buy-in over the long haul.

4 Competencies For Managing Organizational Change:

1. Change Management - A good manager of change proactively seeks opportunities to redirect self, others, and the organization to achieve desired results.

2. Leadership - A good manager of change drives business results by aligning the vision, mission, and values to enhance business value. They are able to enlist the willing cooperation of others, while tapping into their highest skills and abilities, to achieve desired results.

3. Creative Thinking - A good manager of change is innovative. They incorporate existing ideas and new ideas in a unique approach to resolve issues and capitalize on opportunities.

4. Management Controls - A good manager of change exercises the necessary management controls to ensure the integrity of the organization's processes.

Summary: One of the most challenging responsibilities of management is leading organizations and personnel through change. With planning ahead, getting your employees and co-workers input and checking on the status of your plan, change will be easier for everyone to handle.
